Department for Employment and Learning, Annual Skills Conference

May 2009

The Brief:

In May 2009, Morrow Communications organised the fourth Annual Skills Conference on behalf of the Department for Employment and Learning.  Under the Success through Skills campaign, the theme for this year’s event was Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) with the message of reiterating the importance of these subjects within an increasingly knowledge based economy in Northern Ireland.

The Event:

One venue stood out as the natural choice and complemented the theme for this conference perfectly, W5 in Belfast, Northern Irelands Science and Discovery Centre.  With a purpose built auditorium for 200 delegates, state of the art audio visual, ample exhibition space as well as the added attraction of interactive science exhibits to explore during lunch.

Morrow Communications led this event and attended weekly meetings with the steering group to develop the programme for the conference including identifying and booking conference chair and speakers.  Richard Noble, Challenger, Entrepreneur and the Director of the Bloodhound project was secured as a keynote speaker.   Richard was a holder of the Land Speed Record between 1983 and 1997, and was the project director of ThrustSCC the vehicle which currently holds the Land Speed Record.  Delegates also heard from Professor Damien McDonnell, Chair of the Matrix Panel as well as the Minster for Employment and Learning.  The conference was chaired by Seamus McKee who ensured a lively question and answer session between speakers and delegates.

Throughout the project Morrows worked closely with the design team at AV Browne to produce the collateral for the conference programme.  This was complemented by the recommendation of using an innovative truss and banner set within unique surroundings of W5 rather than a standard set.  We also sourced the additional audio requirements needed to complement Richard’s presentation – the sonic boom created when the land speed record of 763 mph was achieved. We were also the main point of contact for all exhibitor arrangements including technical requirements.

The Result:

Demand for this event was astounding and over 200 delegates attended this insightful event.  Morrow Communications are currently working with DEL on the 2010 Skills Conference.
